General Information

Easily recognized by its bright orange eyes and prominent ear tufts. It is a proficient hunter usually taking small mammals e.g. voles. This mysterious owl is known to catch mice in complete darkness relying on its acute hearing.

Fun Fact

The Long-eared owl is the most nocturnal of all British owls and therefore the most mysterious.

Keeper Notes

Although long-eared are permanent Uk residents in the winter numbers can increase by migrants from Scandinavia. They fly the 1000’s km looking for milder weather and food.
